How to promote your app on a forum: 7 pieces of advice
If you have just developed your first Android app, you’re probably wondering how to promote it. Well, it isn’t an easy task. Even a well made and useful app faces competition with thousands of similar apps, and the risk is that it will never be appreciated. You must make informed actions to advertise well.
1. Choose the right forum
Make sure that the forum you choose talks about relevant apps. There are many forums online that have to do with apps, but these aren’t necessary all correct for your purpose. You should find a forum that encourages conversation regarding the type of app that you developed its’ service. This will allow you to reach a niche of public that will be likely more interested in your app.
2. Follow the rules
Almost every forum has rules; before posting, make sure to read them and check that your post adheres to them.
3. Choose the correct section
Before randomly publishing your post, try to understand the structure of the forum. You might find out that it has a special section dedicated to app developers to present their apps. In any case you’ll be able to identify the best section to publish your post.
4. Introduce yourself
Do not post about your app before introducing yourself properly. A new thread started by a user with no posts is likely to be seen as spam, and it won’t get much attention. It’s better to introduce yourself and attempt to interact with other users, and only then you can introduce your app emphasizing the aspects that interest that particular community’s users.
5. Be a regular poster
Oftentimes, introducing yourself is not enough. Personally, whenever I read a post, I check the stats of that poster in order to evaluate how much I can trust his feedback. If it’s a user asking for information this is not relevant, but if a user is giving advice on the forum, his reputation is very important.
Therefore, if you’re thinking of using a forum to introduce your app, my suggestion is to be a regular poster at least for a few months before introducing the app, and partecipate to the conversation to obtain the other users’ trust.
Once you fit in the community, you’re ready to talk about your app – but not before. I am aware it is a long and tiresome process, but it’ll pay off in the end.
6. New thread or existent thread?
Even if starting a new thread – maybe that contains the name of your app – seems to be the most logical thing to do, it’s not necessary the best choice. Try posting in an existent and popular thread where your contribution could be of some interest for the people participating in the conversation.
People usually subscribe to a thread they follow and they get notifications when something new is posted. This will bring more attention to your app.
7. Don’t vanish after posting
If you think your job is complete after publishing a post about your app, you’re wrong: it actually has begun. Forums are a place for discussion, and if you don’t pay attention to people that ask questions or that ask for more details and criticize you (which happens often), you’re doing it wrong. If you don’t have the time to follow up on the conversation on the forum, you should choose a different strategy to publicize your app. Forums are not like social networks: posts stay on the web forever. A negative critique that you never responded to will remain on the Internet forever, and this won’t reflect well on you or your app.
I hope that, besides these suggestions, you have an understanding that forums are not just a bunch of threads and posts but a place for people to share thoughts; you should interact with them using the same kindness and manners that you would use with a group of friends: this is the key to your success!
